Melatonin has a lot of effects, many of which are very positive.
Some of the most common known benefits are the help with sleep, jet lags but also headaches and even weight loss.
Melatonin is naturally produced in every human being, and helps to regulate the sleep/waking cycle. When this is slightly off (jet lag) or when you have problems with it (sleeping problems, fatigue, head aches or even bad moods) melatonin can help you solve these problems.
One big advantage of melatonin is that is has very little side effects. Some people might experience headaches and drowsiness though. So make sure you don’t drive or operate heavy machinery when you have taken melatonin.
Another effect that is reported quite often is people experiencing vivid dreaming. This is experienced both positively or negatively depending on whether these are happy/nice dreams or nightmares. Some people use melatonin to try and have lucid dreams.
Is melatonin safe?
Melatonin is one of the least toxic substances known. People have taken as much as 6 grams (600 to 3000 times the normal dosage) in carefully monitored studies with no sign of any toxicity or severe side effects. The most common side effect experienced in these cases was drowsiness and/or headaches.
So generally speaking we can say; yes, it is safe.
Effects on children
Melatonin is considered to be safe for children. It is used quite a bit with children who have trouble sleeping due to disturbed sleeping patterns.
Make sure you always consult your doctor before giving it to children.
Effects on adults
Several studies show that melatonin has positive effects on helping sleeping for older adults (50+). These effects were the strongest at a dose of only 0.3mg! You can read the article on this research here
Make sure you always start with a low dose when you start using it. Then you can slowly increase your dose until you get the desired effects (without experiencing side effects).
